Starting with newer platforms like the VW Golf 8, VW ID electric series, and Audi Q6 e-tron, VAG introduced a cybersecurity feature known as SFD (Schutz für Fahrzeugdiagnose - Vehicle Diagnostic Protection) . This is a digital firewall that requires an online unlock token, verified by VAG servers, before any control module can be modified. VCDS can read fault codes on SFD-equipped cars, but to change settings (coding and adaptations), the tool needs a token, which is a complex process not yet fully streamlined for DIY users.
